5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Windows

1. Choosing the Wrong Window Size
The Problem:
Purchasing windows that are even slightly larger or smaller for the opening can result in gaps, air leaks or poor seals in the installation.

What can we do to avoid this?
1)Make sure to measure the window opening at least three times - top, center, bottom, and sides.
2)Window openings in older homes should also take into account deviations in shape and size.
3)If in doubt, consult a professional or supplier immediately to make sure the dimensions are correct before placing an order.
2. Neglecting the Waterproofing Treatment You Should Have
Problem:
Without proper waterproofing and sealant tape treatment, rainwater or other sewage can seep into every corner of the frame, leading to rot, mold, or structural damage.

What can we do to avoid this?
1)Use high-quality waterproofing tape and waterproofing sealant around the entire perimeter of window openings, preferably using a sealant window with excellent waterproofing properties.
2)It's a good idea to make sure your windows use a continuous waterproofing layer to prevent moisture from seeping in.
3)Don't forget to properly install drip caps above windows.
3. Neglecting Horizontal and Plumb Alignment
Problems:
If the window is not in a perfectly horizontal and plumb (vertically straight) condition, problems such as difficulty in opening and closing, uneven gaps, and poor insulation/cooling may occur.

What can we do to avoid this?
1)Adjust the window position using a level and shims until it is perfectly aligned.
2)Check the alignment before and after fixing the window frame for comparison.
3)Be careful not to over-tighten screws or nails or the window frame will be deformed or damaged.
4. Overlooking Insulation Around the Frame
The Problem:
Properly insulating the gap between the window frame and the rough opening is an important thing that many people overlook, resulting in airflow and energy loss.

What can we do to avoid this?
1)Fill the gaps with low-expansion spray foam insulation, which needs to be designed for windows and doors. Therefore, don't use regular expanding foam, which can expand too much and cause the window frame to warp.
2)Finally windows are sealed with weatherstripping or caulking for an excellent clean, airtight seal.
5. Using the Wrong Type of Fasteners in Your Window Installation
Problem:
Using nails, screws, or other fasteners that are not appropriate for your type of window can weaken the installation, affect long-term stability, and in severe cases lead to deformation and peeling.

What can we do to avoid this?
1)Always follow the manufacturer's, factory's or master’s instructions and use the recommended fasteners for your windows.
2) Choose screws and nails made of corrosion-resistant materials, especially if your home is in a coastal or humid area, or if one of your rooms is permanently damp, etc., which can delay the life of your windows.
3) Remember not to over-tighten the screws, as this may cause the window frame to crack or warp and become unusable. Therefore, just tighten the screws to the proper position.
