Aluminium windows and doors are renowned for their durability, sleek modern aesthetics and high resistance to corrosion. However, like all building materials, aluminium windows and doors require proper care and maintenance to keep them functioning properly and looking their best for the long term. Whether you are a homeowner, tenant or property manager, this tutorial will show you how to prolong the life of your aluminium windows and doors.

1. It is important to clean windows and doors regularly

Dust, dirt and moisture can build up on window and door surfaces and window and door tracks, leading to corrosion or difficulty in opening and closing.

How to clean aluminium windows and doors?

(1) They can be cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with soapy water.

(2) Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wire balls for cleaning as they may scratch or damage the surface of the door or window.

(3) Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean soft cloth.

(4) Frequency of window and door cleaning: at least once every 2-3 months, or more frequently if windows and doors are used in coastal or dusty environments.

2. Lubricate the moving parts of windows and doors

Tracks, rollers and hinges are vital to the smooth opening and closing of windows and doors. Without proper lubrication of windows and doors, these parts may squeak or be difficult to have open and close operations.

We Recommend the following steps:

(1) Use a silicone-based lubricant on the sliding tracks and rollers of doors and windows.

(2) Obliterate a small amount of engine oil to the hinges and locking mechanisms of doors and windows.

(3) Avoid applying any heavy oil to windows and doors, as it attracts a lot of dust and debris, making it counterproductive.

(4) Tip: Test the operation of doors and windows after application to ensure smooth opening, closing and locking.

3. Check and clean the drainage holes of windows and doors in a timely manner

Aluminium frames usually have drainage holes to allow rainwater to drain out. When the drain holes are clogged with foreign objects, water may accumulate inside the frame and not be able to drain, causing potential damage to the performance of the window or door.

The Maintenance tip is, using a small brush or hose cleaner to remove debris from or near the drain holes every few months or after heavy rainfall.

4. Check window and door sealing strip and weather stripping

Seals help insulate against outdoor drafts, rain and noise. Damaged or worn seals can reduce insulation/cooling performance and increase energy costs and window and door repair costs.

So what should we do for sealing strip and weather stripping?

(1) Inspect the seals and gaskets around the window and door frames for worn or cracked seals.

(2) Replace any damaged weatherstripping/seals promptly.

(3) Ensure that the sealing strip fit tightly every time the window or door is closed.

5. Always on the lookout for windows and doors for any signals of corrosion or damage

Generally speaking, although aluminium is resistant to rust, it is still susceptible to oxidation or surface damage, especially in environments with high humidity or salt content.

The following are prevention tips:

(1) If conditions permit, wipe away water from windows and doors promptly after rain.

(2) If white spots (it means aluminium oxidation) are found on windows and doors, clean them with a non-abrasive aluminium cleaner.

(3) Reapply protective coating or wax to windows and doors once or twice a year.

6. Avoid using harsh chemicals on your windows and doors

Never use acidic or alkaline cleaners, bleach or solvents etc. on aluminium frames. These can damage the finish, reduce the protective layer of oxidation, shorten the life of the window or door, and in severe cases, render the performance inoperable.

At the end of this article, sharing advice on window and door maintenance

Just with very little effort, aluminium windows and doors can last for decades and retain their original look and decent performance. Regular maintenance of windows and doors not only help us prevents major and seriousness problems, but also ensures that you get the most out of your home, building and construction. Make it part of your seasonal home maintenance checklist. Trust me, your aluminium windows and doors will continue to shine and look great for years to come.
